The health & safety, and welfare of our employees, our customers, contractors, the general public and visitors is of critical importance and is protected (so far as is reasonably practicable) through our meticulous planning, assessment, execution and supervision of all contract lifts. 

Environmental

Environmental aspects are also considered as part of the planning and execution of the lift and impacts to the environment are minimised. The competence of staff is qualified through their technical knowledge, skill, experience, qualifications and adherence to relevant standards, regulations and legislation such as;

    • Health and Safety At Work Act 1974
    • Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999
    • Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER)
    • BS 7121 Safe Use of Cranes.

Key Requirements:-

BS 7121 “The Safe Use Of Cranes” makes it clear that the Hirer is in overall control of the lifting operation and has responsibility for providing suitably trained and competent personnel to ensure adequate supervision of the operation.

Definitions of Responsibilities:-


Employing Organisation

Person or organisation who requires a lifting operation to be carried out and who has responsibility for safe use of the crane.

The employing organisation should contract an appointed person prior to each specific lifting operation.  The appointed person should ensure that the safe system of work is undertaken.

Note: Provision of an appointed person does not lessen the legal responsibility of the employing organisation for ensuring safety.  The appointed person may have other duties and is not necessarily a direct employee of the employing organisation.  The appointed person should have sufficient training and experience to carry out all duties competently.

The person or organisation with overall control of the place of work and the employers of personnel involved in the lifting operation should be responsible for safety.  For responsibility to be effectively discharged, the appointed person should have sufficient authority to ensure that appropriate safety systems are in operation.

 

Appointed Person

Person with training, practical and theoretical knowledge and experience required to comply with the requirements of BS 7121, section 4.7.

Crane Supervisor

Person who controls the lifting operation, and ensures that it is carried out in accordance with the appointed person’s safe system of work.

Slinger

Person responsible for attaching and detaching the load to and from the crane and for correct selection and use of lifting accessories.

Signaller

Person responsible for directing the crane driver to ensure safe movement of the crane and load.

Competent Person


Person with appropriate practical and theoretical knowledge and experience to examine lifting equipment and to detect defects or weaknesses in the equipment, and to assess these in relation to safety and to continued use of the equipment.
